Who We Are

The Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) is a network of public urban research universities that represents every region of our country.

University presidents created the Coalition to leverage the intellectual capital and economic power of urban universities, thereby improving urban life and America’s competitiveness in the global economy.

USU is a 501 (c) 6 membership organization, which has established a permanent partnership with the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) to share a joint USU/APLU Office of Urban Initiatives.

Mission & Values

USU institutions seek to create sustainable, affordable, and innovative urban communities free of poverty and inequitable growth as measured by reduction in gaps across economic, social, environmental, education, and health outcomes across its learners and residents. To better our institutions we focus on:

  • Diversity & Inclusion

  • Engagement

  • Innovation

  • Future

What We Do

Building Smart Resilient Cities

USU identified Smart Resilient Cities as a priority area. Through our collective work, we discovered there was little to no literature around the role the university does or might play in building smarter, more resilient cities. To address that gap, a group of USU university leaders worked together to develop an annotated bibliography to help universities and communities work together to build a smart resilient city.
