Mitzy González serves as Program Manager of the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities. In this role, she will be working on the Frontier Set project funded through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which looks at the role of transformation on closing achievement gaps, more specifically for underrepresented students, by elevating the institutional stories to inform the project, but the field more broadly.

Mitzy is a passionate advocate for equity and inclusion in higher education. Prior to joining APLU, she served as an Assistant Director in the Center for Higher Education Innovation and University Innovation Alliance Fellow at the University of Central Florida. She comes to APLU with significant experience and knowledge in change management, scaling proven innovations, and redesigning higher education around the needs of today’s students. As the UCF Frontier Set site lead, she supported organizational capacity building and collaborated with senior leadership across national networks to advance equitable outcomes for students. She supported a campus-wide academic advising redesign process and helped implement a chatbot technology solution. She also worked on strategic university efforts in advancing UCF’s identity as a Hispanic Serving Institution. Prior to her time at UCF, she served as an Assistant Director in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at UNC Chapel Hill.

Mitzy earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Florida and her Masters in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mitzy is a proud first-generation college graduate, Latina, and social worker. She believes social workers are needed in all spaces, especially in higher education. Social workers bring a specific relational and system-level mindset which can help public research universities in their mission to advance communities, regions, and the nation.
